You’ve heard it said before: niche down? Why? What does that mean anyway?
Many of us have many things that we are good at, and when it comes to creating an online business, we feel like we want to be all things to all people. We are afraid to leave anyone out for fear it will mean we won’t be successful, or that we are leaving money on the table. That approach can be a mistake a for a few reasons.
One of the reasons trying to be everything to everyone can get in your way, is that it makes it harder to resonate with a particular segment of the market. Let’s say you are creating a course on Facebook marketing. Well that is great, but what if your Facebook Marketing was just geared to a particular segment of the market? Maybe chiropractors? So let’s say you are a chiropractor struggling to market your business, you have a feeling social media could be good for your business, but you don’t know where to start. You do some research and you find there are lots of courses out there on marketing your business using social media. And then you come across a program that is designed specifically for chiropractors. Which product are you going to choose? Most likely, you are going to buy the one totally geared toward you. You are going to feel the person who created to program really understands you.
The other advantage to niching down is you are able to speak their language in your marketing efforts, emails, social media, etc. If you are talking to a very specific portion of the market, you can talk directly to them, and address the issues that are specific to their industry. The way you word an email, or an ad targeted to a chiropractor would certainly be different than if you were targeting plumbers, or mechanics. And by speaking their language, they are going to feel you understand them, and hopefully you do!
Another reason it can beneficial to niche down is advertising. These days we have the ability to really target when using social media platforms to target our businesses. If you are targeting a specific niche, you can just show your ads to that niche, no wasting money showing your ads to everyone.
I recommend starting with a niche that you understand and know well, and can relate to. This does not mean it is your only niche forever, but I am a firm believer in doing one thing well, rather than a million things, not so well. Good luck on your journey, I’d love to hear how it goes.
